Apple is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) to your iPhone, aiming to revolutionize your device usage. Branded as “Apple Intelligence,” this suite of AI tools will enhance Siri, the company's voice assistant, through a collaboration with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT.

The beta version of iOS 18.1 introduces features such as advanced writing tools, suggested replies in Messages, email summarization, and phone call transcription. Over time, you can expect more features like Image Playground for creating animated images and Genmoji for custom emojis. Siri will receive significant upgrades, including ChatGPT integration for improved language comprehension and deeper app integration. For example, Siri might be able to find out your mother's flight details from recent messages and emails.
The rollout of Apple Intelligence will be gradual, so the immediate impact will be minimal. However, once activated, you should find your interactions more personalized and tasks completed more quickly. For example, new tools will help you write emails on the go and transcribe phone calls with permission. “Everyday tasks will become easier and more enjoyable,” says Adam Biddlecombe, co-founder of the AI newsletter Mindstream.
Siri will be able to offer contextual replies, remembering previous interactions. A visual indicator around the Siri icon will show when it is listening, enhancing transparency.
Like any emerging technology, the AI features might encounter glitches. Although Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, is confident in the quality of Apple Intelligence, he acknowledges that it might not be flawless, suggesting that users should verify critical information independently.
How Does ChatGPT on iPhone Differ from the ChatGPT App?
One key difference is how data is managed. Camden Woollven of GRC International Group explains that using ChatGPT directly involves sending queries to OpenAI's servers, whereas Siri integrates ChatGPT through a privacy-focused approach. Siri processes most requests locally on your device and, if necessary, sends anonymized and encrypted data to Apple’s servers before it reaches ChatGPT.
Are Your Conversations Tracked or Stored?
Apple promises transparency regarding data use through an Apple Intelligence Report, which will detail how each Siri request was processed and where your data was sent. If you are concerned about privacy or the usefulness of these features, you can choose to disable Apple Intelligence in your iPhone’s settings.
